 New Release
June 18, 2001

Real indie, real underground, real cool. Two guys traveling across the country, trying
to make a buck, recording songs that they write on the road, in various hotel rooms after
performing shows, on a mini-disk recorder. Two guitars, a harmonica, and a couple of
voc's. It's raw, it's revealing, and it's late at night (early morning). It's Michael
Knott and his musician/song-writer friend, Noah Riemer, pairing off equally in the writing,
singing, and performing of nine incredible tunes. A must get for any lovers of Michael Knott,
Tickle Penny Corner, Johnny Cash, Hank Williams Sr., Dylan, Lyle Lovett, and the rest of the
bums. Order at michaelknott.com or mikeknott.com today or tonight or tomorrow.
Only $8.00 through Michael's website.

Oaks, CA.

Last night, the band played a showcase at the Troubador in Hollywood, CA. Below

 New Album!
Jan. 2, 2001

Mike has completed an album for Metro One Records. This album combines
elements of the earlier, unrealized Life of David project with elements
of another solo project called Halo. Metro One will be distributing
the album via Word; this has the potential of being Mike's biggest CCM
exposure to date. This will be Mike's first Word-distributed album since
Rocket and a Bomb.

The album will be called Life of David. There is no longer a Halo
album in the works.

The album will include a multimedia track with a video for a new song
called "Hospital." The track was recorded for the album and the video
simultaneously. Mike brought in Chris Lizotte to assist with production
duties on this project.

An April 17, 2001 release is planned for the album. Details will be posted as
they are made available by management.

New releases/New Theory on Pre-Orders
June 5, '00

I learned my lesson with the Bomb Bay Babies pre-orders.
Nearly 50 people pre-ordered the disc. The manufacturing
was beset with deadline slips for one reason or another -
art re-work, master disc sector errors, you name it.
In the end, we learned some things, got it right, and
now the disc is ready (all pre-orders have shipped).

Anyhow, we'll never run a pre-order offer the same
way again. We do intend to offer pre-ordering,
because it helps to pay down the manufacturing debt.
Different circumstances will prevail, though.

Once the masters have been approved by the manufacturer,
and everything is truly a "go," THEN we'll offer people
the opportunity to pre-order the new discs at a discount
price. We won't assume everything will be dandy, like
last time.

There are three new CD jobs in progress:

Michael Knott - "Live in Nash-Vegas"
Michael Knott - "Things I've Done, Things to Come"
Aunt Bettys - "Ford Supersonic" (2nd run, updated pkg.)

Artwork and masters for all three have been shipped to
the manufacturer. Masters are awaiting approval.

 Andrew Carter
June 5, '00

Anyone who saw Strung Gurus play at the Dennis Danell family benefit show
last month knows that Andrew Carter of the Aunt Bettys has returned to Orange
County. Carter is also playing with a power-pop outfit called Goforth,
who are hitting OC and LA county clubs looking for a record deal.

The group has produced a three song demo with Carter in the line-up.
The song titles are:

Headchange
Waste of Time
Suzie

Dennis Danell (Social Distortion, Strung Gurus), R.I.P.
    February 29, 2000

The following is Dennis Danell's obituary, as written for E! Online by David Jenison:

Social Distortion Guitarist Dies at 38

Dennis Danell, founding guitarist of the seminal California punk band Social Distortion, died at his Newport Beach home Tuesday of a brain aneurysm. Danell is survived by his wife Christie, a three year old son and a 6-month-old daughter.

Danell started Social Distortion in 1979 with high school classmate Mike Ness, who together released such esteemed albums as Mommy's Little Monster (1982), Prison Bound (1985), Social Distortion (1990), and White Light, White Heat, White Trash (1996), to name a few. The band's last release, Live At the Roxy (1998), enjoyed a radio single with "Story of My Life," a song originally recorded on their certified gold self-titled album.

According to a statement from their record label, Mike Ness remarked, "I am saddened beyond any possible form of expression. Dennis and I have been friends since boyhood, starting Social Distortion while we were in high school. My deepest regrets to his family."

Social Distortion went on hiatus followi>

    Transfer interrupted!

During this time, Danell produced numerous bands at Social Distortion's recording studio, Casbah, in Fullerton, California. His production credits last year included Fanmail (BEC Records), Value Pac (Four Door Entertainment), Fraidy Cats (Gray Dot Records), Deluxe Tone Rockets (Sublime/Essential), and Rock Star Barbecue, the debut artist on Danell's new independent label, Masterpiece Records. By 2000, Danell was quickly becoming a much sought after producer in the Orange County area.

Recently, Danell was working on a new side band called the Strung Gurus with Michael Knott of the Orange County band the Aunt Bettys (formerly on Elektra). Danell produced, co-wrote, and played guitar for Strung Gurus, who worked all last year on their first full-length album. The Strung Gurus debut, to be the second release on Masterpiece Records, was near completion with an expected release date of late May.

In an interview for the Strung Gurus promotional bio, Danell had said, "I am very excited about Strung Gurus because the music is high energy and commercial, but it does not sound like Social Distortion. The new band allows me to stretch as a songwriter and producer by tackling a sound outside my comfort zone." Rough mixes of four Strung Gurus songs were already in limited circulation and had started a buzz among fans and local journalists impressed with Danell's versatility and songwriting abilities.

Danell's passions included cars, surfing, and producing bands. He was recognized by those around him as a down-to-earth friend and loving church-going family man. A private memorial for family and close friends will be held this weekend.

    Bomb Bay Babies Volume I
    February 04, '00

The Bomb Bay Babies Volume I collection to Be Released in March

The wait is finally over. The first of two Bomb Bay Babies collections is set
to be released in mid- to late-March as a joint release by Blonde Vinyl/Ear
Pistol/Marathon Records (Ear Pistol is Knott's new company name for the
self-releases). For those who havent heard, the Bomb Bay Babies was a
glammy-punk rock band Knott led in the general market for about three years
before starting Blonde Vinyl Records. The sound mixes N.Y. Dolls, L.S.U., and
even early Adam Ant for some of the best songs from Knott's career. At the
time, Knott actually secured a publishing deal with Windswept Pacific (who
also have the Spice Girls, ironically), and the bands songs have appeared in
places like the TV show JAG and in the film "The Deep End of the Ocean." The
Bomb Bay Babies Volume I will feature nine studio tracks, including a cover
of "Do You Wanna Dance," and then just as many live tracks. Included in the
live tracks is the original version of "Wakin Up the Dead," which was a BBB
song picked up by LSU. Volume II will follow later in the year. Watch for
both to be available on the website and at Knotts shows.

    Cush
    February 04, '00

Michael Knott fronts new band CUSH with members of Prayer Chain!

Prayer Chain members Andy Prickett, Eric Capuzano, and Wayne Everett
have formed a new band called Cush and have asked Michael Knott to lead
the way on vocals. The new foursome have been in the recording studio since
December and are currently finishing up their debut album likely to be released
by May 2000. The music reflects co-songwriting on the part of all members for
an ethereal new sound reminiscent of U2-meets-the Cocteau Twins. Michael
Knott will be performing select shows with the band and promoting the new
album - including a Cush performance at Cornerstone 2000!

    Catalog Update - New Prices
    September 24, '99

Catalog sales have been very slow lately. Recently, some of the titles listed in the catalog were found to be available elsewhere for less than what the Official Mike Knott Web Page was offering. We put two and two together, and adjusted the pricing on several items. Apologies and genuine thanks are extended to those who may have bought items at a higher price via the web page. Where the Knott Page prices match those of a competitor, our lower shipping costs generally beat the competition. Check the Merchandise pages for details.

  • LSU at Cornerstone '91 and '93

  • TOMfest solo/Bettys sets
    2 August, '99

The following info was relayed by Mike's manager, following the TOMfest sets. Acoustic show (4:30 p.m. Saturday; 30 minutes): Knott appeared dressed entirely in black, with scary clown makeup on his face and arms. The set list included: Torn The Fold Bye Bye Colour Die Baby Die Herb's Garage Double Christ Saves Kitty Halo Chameleon (this one was a brand new song) Aunt Bettys set (8:45 p.m. Saturday): Knott was joined by Aunt Bettys drummer Chuck Cummings and three members of Value Pac. The set list included: Jesus Mother Trucker Star Baby Rocket and a Bomb Speedermode Addict Getting Normal Christine on Crystal Two Timin' Jack Rock Stars on H ... plus perhaps a couple of other songs. Knott omitted the swear-word rideout at the end of "Rocket and a Bomb," but apparently the crowd took care of it for him.

    Strung Gurus
    June 25, '99

Mike is currently in the studio with Social Distortion guitarist Dennis Danell working on new material for their Strung Gurus project. The pair's first six song demo stressed mellow acoustic material. According to Knott's management, the pair are adding some more guitar to the previous tracks in addition to recording some new material that rocks a little bit harder. No release info is currently available.

    LSU Acoustic
    June 25, '99

The acoustic LSU project featuring songs voted by Knott fans is still on the way, but has been put on the back burner while Mike concentrates on the Strung Gurus material.

Loss of dial-up access to Official Knott Home Page
    May 27, '99

As of May 30, 1999, I will not have dial-up access to BadgerNet. This means that I won't be able to update the web page. This is a temporary situation. In the meantime, the site will still function; I just won't be able to add news or concert dates until my dial-up access is restored by other means. BadgerNet has been very kind to us, allowing us free dial-up access since these pages' inception. Due to a 450% fee increase by MCI, BadgerNet has been forced to cancel dial-up access altogether. From now on, the web pages are going to cost money out-of-pocket. Regardless, I hope to be up and running again shortly. Note that the catalog is current as of today, and all items should remain in stock through August '99.

LSU acoustic album - fan input requested! - updated
    March 16, '99

Mike is planning a 1999 fan club release, in the spirit of the 1998 release of Ford Supersonic. This time, the plan is to record acoustic versions of past songs, leaning toward the LSU material. Since this is a "fan appreciation" project, Mike is soliciting input for the tracks to include. Knott fans are requested to send a list of the three songs they would most like to hear included on the project to froop@aol.com. On April 30th, the votes will be tallied and the track listing for this project will be announced. Multiple entries will be ignored. Please be sure to include your name with your entry; Mike plans to list all contributors in the liner notes under his thank-you column!

    Lion Communications re-issues
    January 24, '99

This isn't exactly shocking news, after waiting this long, but Michael's manager reports that Lion Communications is experiencing financial difficulties. The erstwhile label's problems are apparently serious enough that their proposed re-issues of The Grape Prophet and Screaming Brittle Siren will not be happening.

    Life of David
    December 29, '98

News from the man himself... Mike says to expect a year 2000 release of the long-rumored Metro One Records project, Life of David. No other details are available at present. However, we know we have this one to anticipate!

Michael Knott/LSU - The Definitive Collection
    December 28, '98 updated entry

Mike's manager has revealed plans by KMG Records to issue an album compiling some of Knott's best material. Tracks have been selected from LSU, Lifesavers, and solo albums. Also included will be two songs from Mike's current mainstream industry demo. The currently planned track listing is as follows:

  • "Shaded Pain" from the Lifesavers Underground album of the same name
  • "This is the Healing" from the LSU album of the same name
  • "Double" from the LSU album Grace Shaker
  • "Bye Bye Colour" from the Lifesavers Underground album Shaded Pain
  • "Tattoo" from Browbeats presents Witherwing
  • "Crash" from the solo album Fluid
  • "Deaf and Dumb" from Brow Beat
  • "Cool" from the solo album Fluid
  • "The Bomb" from the LSU album Wakin' Up the Dead
  • "Wakin' Up the Dead" from the LSU album Wakin' Up the Dead
  • "See Me Fall" from the Lifesavers' Kiss of Life
  • "She's on Fire" from the Lifesavers' Kiss of Life
  • "Rocket and a Bomb" from the solo album of the same name
  • "Goodbyes" from Knott's current industry demo
  • "Miss Understanding" from Knott's current industry demo Notably absent are tracks from LSU's The Grape Prophet and Knott's solo album from Blonde Vinyl Records, Screaming Brittle Siren. These album masters are still owned by Lion Communications, which originally bought them with plans to re-issue. So far, Lion has not announced any intended date of release. While no tracks were taken directly from the Tooth and Nail release, Strip Cycle, Mike intentionally chose the updated version of "Tattoo" to represent both Strip Cycle and Browbeats presents Witherwing. While Mike recognizes that some fans regard the LSU album Cash in Chaos - World Tour as among his best, he felt it simply didn't fall into the scope of the collection's intended statement. It, too, was bypassed. A release date of April 6, 1999 has been announced.

Dogfish Jones debuted on July 1, 1998 at the Cornerstone Festival in Bushnell, IL, where it had been shipped directly by the manufacturer. Bookstore and music store sales require that the album work through the typical channels provided by Platinum Entertainment's distributor, Spring Arbor. It may take some weeks for Dogfish Jones to work through the system. Although many stores are reporting that Dogfish Jones is out of print (due to information provided by their Spring Arbor databases), this is not true. Regarding mail-order availability: Flying Tart Records/Platinum Entertainment has been contacted on behalf of the Official Mike Knott Web Page regarding direct sales. As soon as I hear back from Platinum on this issue, an announcement will be made in this column.

August 5, 1998 addendum: There will be no direct-order availability for Dogfish Jones via this website. Sorry! Platinum Entertainment was not interested in providing direct sales through the Official Mike Knott Web Page. Please order through your local retailer.

    Album release info
    May 27, '98

After last night's performance at the Opium Den in Hollywood, Mike said that he has been told both Brow Beats and LSU's Dogfish Jones will be released in time for the Cornerstone Festival (week of July 4). Keep your fingers crossed! The first single from Brow Beats will be "Stoner Girl." This song includes the Aunt Bettys as the backing band; Mike used studio tracks from an unfinished Bettys song by the same name. Tedd Cookerly of Every Day Life does lead vocal, and gets a co-writing credit for lyrics.

Dogfish Jones, Siren, Grape Prophet, Life of David, Brow Beats
    March 23, '98

Visitors to this website send e-mail daily asking about one or all of these forthcoming releases. The purpose of this News note is to assure all my fellow Knott fans that this News column is updated every time I learn any Knott-related information. So far, I've posted info the same day in which it was heard. There are currently no updates on the release status of:

  • LSU's Dogfish Jones This is owned by Platinum Entertainment, which eliminated its Flying Tart imprint, run by Alex Parker, in the Fall of '97. Platinum is not returning calls regarding Dogfish Jones.
  • Michael Knott's Screaming Brittle Siren
  • LSU's The Grape Prophet The licenses to these two albums have been purchased by Rob Woolsey's Lion Communications. The label has pushed back the release date for these re-issues several times. The last date I heard was mid-April, timed for the GMA convention in Nashville. It doesn't look like that's going to happen.
  • Michael Knott's Life of David project This alleged lounge/surf-pop project for Metro One Records has apparently stalled.
  • Brow Beats No updates for this various-artists project from Frontline Records. For this release, Mike wrote all the material, and is bringing in different singers for each song. This will not be an acoustic release a la the original Brow Beat. Jason Martin of Starflyer 59, Terry Taylor (Daniel Amos, Swirling Eddies, Crime Horse), Scott Silletta from Plankeye, Gene Eugene of Adam Again, and Tedd Cookerly of Every Day Life are among the vocalists.

  • Aunt Bettys "Ford Supersonic" Bad News/Good News
    March 23, '98

The Bad News: We have lost one track from the Ford Supersonic line-up. Source material for The Way that it Goes was vastly inferior to the other tracks. The Good News: Knott's management gave us permission to add three tracks!

  • Widget Man
  • Motor Queen
  • Top of the World Unfortunately for those who have never heard it, you'll have to take my word for it that any one of these tracks is a better song than The Way that it Goes. Widget Man is a track from the demo that got Aunt Bettys their deal with Elektra Records. Motor Queen is an incredible later track that the band played live only a couple of times before breaking up. Top of the World is a great song that I never heard performed live. It's a real lighter-waving, sing-a-long number, somewhere between perhaps Bowie's All the Young Dudes and the Rolling Stones' You Can't Always Get What You Want. See the updated track listing for Ford Supersonic on the Lyrics page, or the Ford Supersonic page. This is last-call to vote for the Ford Supersonic album cover; the final decision will be made by Wed., March 25. To vote, see the Ford Supersonic page.

Jerry Harrison of Talking Heads, Tom Morello of Rage Against
the Machine, and the bass player of Live were also seen in attendance. They
were there to see bands following Knott, but they heard Knott nonetheless.

    The band again included:

Mike Knott - lead vocal, electric guitar
Andy Prickett - lead guitar, background vocal
    Eric Campuzano - bass
Robert Meyer - Fender Rhodes keyboard, organ, background vocal
Ed "Giles" Benrock - drums, background vocal

    The set included:

Miss Understanding (from Mike's current industry demo)
Sugar Mama (from the Strip Cycle album)
Movie Star (from current demo; a re-worked post-Elektra Aunt Bettys tune)
Good-byes (from Mike's current industry demo)
Halo (from Mike's current industry demo)
Local Supply (a re-worked post-Elektra Aunt Bettys tune)
Transistor Sister (from the Strip Cycle album)
... and an "unidentified" new song
