Aunt Bettys
Ford Supersonic
Marathon Records
**** (out of four stars)

Orange County faves The Aunt Bettys, have released a new indie album to follow up their self-titled Elektra Records debut. Recorded in the same studio as the Elektra album, Ford Supersonic features high energy pop rock songs which range in sound from the Rolling Stones doing punk rock to David Bowie doing the Stones.

As with their Elektra debut, the Aunt Bettys continue to write songs about fascinating characters which their lead singer, Michael Knott, encounters around Orange County. The song "Getting Normal," which sounds like a more pissed off version of the Violent Femmes' "Blister in the Sun," talks about a junkie girl Knott knows who went nuts trying support her habit. Other songs, like "Two Timin' Jack," "Christine on Crystal," and "Shoot Allison," actually use the people's names in the song title.

Other songs not to be missed are the ultra-pop "Movie Star" and the perpetually gimmicky "Rock Stars on H." As a whole, the thirteen song album (plus three live tracks) stands up to the quality of their self-titled debut, so their fans will absolutely love Ford Supersonic.
